I found the LZ Russell Web Site by accident just surfing old VN stuff. I was in a hole just below the only 106 RR on the FSB at the time. I couldn't even tell if we faced North, south or what. While on the FSB my fire team constructed a shoot for discarded 105 cannisters out of corrogated steel. The gun teams would then throw empty rounds into it so they didn't clutter up the hill. I'll never forget the sound as hundreds of cannisters toppled down that shoot to outside the wire. The Shoot had to be anchored down the side of the hill with engineer stakes and tied with wire from old C-Ration cases. It's been a long time. I remember clearing an additional LZ just off from the main Hill with C-4 to remove trees. Once the fuse was set we had time to return to the main hill. Just as we returned to Russell a very small chopper was spotted approaching that ready to blow LZ. They tried to radio the bird but he was too close. The trees jumped into the air and that little bird took off back to the rear. We were told it was an Officer coming to Russell. Don't know but I bet I gave him a rush when the trees went 30 feet into the air. I also remember using bangallore torpedos (1954 vintage) to push out through the wire on Russell to clear more fields of fire when we set them off. I loved my job blowing shit up.
