Nguyen Duc Thuy Anh Scholarship Fund
In 2001 the LZ Russell Association established the Thuy Anh Scholarship Fund. Thuy Anh at that time was a young Vietnamese girl living with her parents Mr. & Mrs. Nguyen Thanh Duy in Dong Ha, Quang Tri Province, Viet Nam. Robb Mitchell and I met her in connection with her father, Mr. Duy, who served as our Tour Guide during our visits to Quang Tri Province (DMZ Tours in Quang Tri). Thuy Anh was graduating from High School and looking forward to attending Ho Chi Minh University in Ho Chi Minh City. The family, with both parents working and providing for other children in the home were challenged with the significant expenses for Thuy Anh to attend college. Robb Mitchell and I presented a proposal to the LZ Russell Association Board of Directors suggesting the Association establish a four year scholastic scholarship fund for Thuy Anh. The proposal won the support of the Board. Numerous Association members have made “designated” donations to this fund. Several members contributed on a regular bases to ensure the commitment met. During the four year period we received reports from Thuy Anh and her family related to her academic performance. We also enjoyed hearing of her challenges and growth opportunities as a college student. She shared with us her joy of learning and being successful as a student. She diligently worked in her classes and achieved academic excellence. Upon graduation from Ho Chi Minh University in July 2005 she was actively recruited by several business in Viet Nam. She interviewed with these companies but also pursued an opportunity to enter an internship program with Proctor and Gamble – Viet Nam. She was chosen for the internship. Upon completing the internship she was hired by Proctor and Gamble as a Financial Annalist. In August the Association received letters from Thuy Anh and her parents. They expressed sincere and heart felt appreciation for the support LZ Russell Association extended in her behalf. To our members I would like to say thank you. Thank you for your interest in this young lady, for the financial support that assisted her pursuit of a higher education, and for that spirit of our brotherhood that endeavors to extend a humanitarian hand of compassion and opportunity.
