Members of the LZ Russell Association attending the 8/05 Reunion in Las Vegas approved the Board's recommendation that we undertake sponsorship in the amount of $2,500. - $5,000 to be provided to the Marine Corps Community Services Center at 29 Palms.  This project was put out to members for discussion over a year ago.  We accepted input from members and gathered information as to how the money would be spent.  We received a good deal of comment and input.  Thanks to everyone that shared their ideas.

The Marine Corps Community Services Center at 29 Palms participates in a number of activities that honor and recognize our Marine Troops as they return from service in the Middle East.  As well, they provide services to families of those Troops while they are deployed.  The funds can be used to purchase playground equipment at the childcare center, to help pay for moral boosters for families, and to help cover costs of the We Salute You Program.  Several times a year, the Center puts on what they use to call a Welcome Home event for those returning from the Middle East.  We have heard that these events are very meaningful to the Troops and their families.  The Troops receive a welcoming that most of us didnt experience and their children get to see their fathers and mothers honored for their sacrifice and service to our country.

A benefit to the LZ Russell Association is that the Marine Corps Community Services by law cannot accept straight donations; they have to earn the money.  So, they offer their donors an opportunity to buy advertising space.  For our donation we can choose to advertise the LZ Russell Association through; signs on the softball field (year around sports are played on these fields), video commercials in the theater (reaches approximately 20,000 a month), direct ads, logos can be inserted on newsletters, posters, and road side signs.  We will use the LZ Russell name, logo, and website address.  Through these venues we hope to reach Marines that were associated with LZ Russell or their families.
